After weeks of waiting, DaBaby started the New Year with the brand new single "Masterpiece".
The 29-year-old rapper shared an excerpt of the song in a video he posted on Instagram in December, but the exact release date of "Masterpiece" remained a mystery until the song was released on January 15, 2021 by Interscope Records / Universal on digital platforms.
"Masterpiece" was produced by D.A. Got That Dope, is a song in the classic style of DaBaby, with the rapper referring to the lyrics of the single in love, in luxury cars and his enemies.
However, DaBaby's response through the first stanza of "Masterpiece" to the tragic incident in which he was involved in November 2018 is attracting attention. While he was shopping in a store in North Carolina with his two children and their mother, he shot dead, in self-defense a 19-year-old man who allegedly threatened him and his children with a gun that he would kill them.
The rapper was found guilty of covert weapons, but was acquitted in March 2019.
In the music video that accompanies the "Masterpiece", DaBaby appears with his partner, the Dominican singer, rapper, dancer and choreographer DaniLeigh. The couple confirmed their relationship last December.
"Masterpiece" is the first release of DaBaby after the great year it spent in 2020.
He dominated for seven weeks in total at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the hit "Rockstar" in collaboration with Roddy Ricch, while the album "Blame It On Baby" debuted in April at No. 1 of the Billboard 200.
