Justin Timberlake has a chance to set the record straight on Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction,” and according to Janet’s longtime fashion designer, the truth is that the Super Bowl outfit worked exactly as intended.
Wayne Scot Lukas appeared on “TMZ Live” on Tuesday to discuss Timberlake’s upcoming four-part documentary series, due on Apple TV+ in December. The Super Bowl incident is expected to be a major part of it, but Lukas says he wasn’t asked to participate, even though he was at the center of the whole affair.
Lukas says Timberlake never apologized to him, though he claims the fallout badly hurt his career. He also argues that “wardrobe malfunction” is a misnomer because the outfit was meant to expose Janet’s breast. That was a change made when it was decided the performance needed a bigger moment.
According to Lukas, the original plan was for Jackson to flash her backside, and he brought a G-string as proof. The plan shifted to the breast reveal just days before the show. He says the cameras were supposed to cut away and the screen was supposed to go black immediately afterward, but that never happened, and he blames the producers.
It’s worth noting that Jackson has maintained for years that the incident was a complete accident and not a planned stunt, though Lukas clearly remembers it differently.
Lukas says he doesn’t need an apology from Timberlake, but he believes Timberlake should tell the true version of the story. Now it’s a matter of waiting to see what Timberlake has to say.
