Venom The Last Dance Box Office Officially Passes Sony’s Oscar-Winning 2018 Marvel Movie’s Entire Gross In Just 3 Weeks

The topic “Venom The Last Dance Box Office Officially Passes Sony’s Oscar-Winning 2018 Marvel Movie’s Entire Gross In Just 3 Weeks” has two versions, a written one, and a video version below the written one.

“Venom: The Last Dance” has now surpassed a major superhero film from Sony at the box office. Tom Hardy’s Venom movies are the most popular and successful entries in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Given this popularity, it was anticipated that Venom: The Last Dance would outperform other criticized films in the Sony Spider-Man Universe, such as Morbius and Madame Web. This expectation has been realized; the presence of various symbiotes in Venom: The Last Dance has contributed to its box office success, allowing it to surpass a Spider-Man movie.

According to data from Box Office Mojo, “Venom: The Last Dance” has surpassed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” at the box office after only three weeks. Tom Hardy’s final Venom movie has achieved a worldwide total of $396.4 million, compared to the first “Spider-Verse” movie’s $393.6 million. Given that “Venom: The Last Dance” provides a definitive conclusion to the Sony Marvel franchise, there is still a chance for the “Spider-Verse” films to reclaim the box office lead. “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” has yet to be released and concludes the animated franchise.

What Venom: The Last Dance's Latest Box Office Update Means

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Gets A Decent Box Office Performer At Last

Venom The Last Dance Box Office Officially Passes Sony's Oscar-Winning 2018 Marvel Movie's Entire Gross In Just 3 Weeks

“Venom: The Last Dance” firmly establishes the Tom Hardy franchise as the most popular in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU). While the film may not match the box office numbers of Hardy’s previous two “Venom” movies, this could be attributed more to the broader franchise context than Venom as a character. However, “Venom: The Last Dance” performed significantly better than “Morbius,” which grossed $167.4 million worldwide, and “Madame Web,” which only earned $100.5 million globally. This outcome was anticipated, but it is surprising that “Venom: The Last Dance” has surpassed a beloved, Oscar-winning film like “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” especially given the negative reviews from critics.

There are two possible reasons why “Venom: The Last Dance” has outperformed “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” at the box office. Firstly, the placement of the movies within their respective franchises plays a role; the third “Venom” film concludes a trilogy that has been generally well-received by fans, while “Into the Spider-Verse” is the inaugural entry in its franchise. Secondly, the “Spider-Verse” movies are animated, and despite their high quality, neither film in the franchise has been able to surpass the box office earnings of any live-action “Spider-Man” movie.

Our Take On Venom: The Last Dance's Latest Box Office Update

The Venom Franchise Goes Out On A Positive Note

Venom The Last Dance Box Office Officially Passes Sony's Oscar-Winning 2018 Marvel Movie's Entire Gross In Just 3 Weeks

While “Venom: The Last Dance” is unlikely to surpass the $690.5 million worldwide gross of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” it is exciting that the Tom Hardy film has outperformed the box office of the original “Spider-Verse” movie. This indicates that the Venom franchise still resonates with fans, despite some missteps in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU). With a reported budget of $120 million, the latest box office update shows that “Venom: The Last Dance” has made $396.4 million, meaning Tom Hardy’s final outing as Venom is a success. The film is proving to be profitable for Sony.

Based on previous releases from Sony Pictures, fans may be able to estimate a rough timeframe for when “Venom: The Last Dance” will be available on digital platforms and streaming services. This film officially concludes the trilogy of “Venom” movies featuring Tom Hardy, leaving many fans questioning whether Venom actually died in the movie.

For instance, “Venom 3” features a total of eight Symbiotes from the Marvel universe, as Eddie Brock and Venom find themselves on the run from multiple factions.

When Will Venom: The Last Dance Release on Digital?

Here's When Venom: The Last Dance's Streaming Debut Is Now Expected

“Venom: The Last Dance” was just debuted in theaters on October 25. Given the recent trend of theatrical-to-digital releases from Sony Pictures, it’s easy to anticipate when the film might become available for purchase on digital platforms.

“The Last Dance” is the latest major release from Sony Pictures in the past year. The company has also premiered several other significant films, including “Madame Web,” “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” and “It Ends With Us,” all in 2024.

Recently, six movies from Sony Pictures have been released, each with a theater-to-digital window ranging from 30 to 60 days. Below are some examples of these films, including their theatrical and digital release dates, along with the number of days between the two releases for each project:

  • Anyone But You:
    • Theatrical: December 22, 2023
    • Digital: February 20, 2024 (60 days later)
  • Madame Web:
    • Theatrical: February 14, 2024
    • Digital: March 15, 2024 (30 days later)
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire:
    • Theatrical: March 22, 2024
    • Digital: May 7, 2024 (46 days later)
  • Bad Boys: Ride or Die:
    • Theatrical: June 7, 2024
    • Digital: July 23, 2024 (46 days later)
  • Fly Me to the Moon:
    • Theatrical: July 12, 2024
    • Digital: August 13, 2024 (32 days later)
  • It Ends With Us:
    • Theatrical: August 9, 2024
    • Digital: September 24, 2024 (46 days later)

“Venom: The Last Dance” is expected to be available digitally between 30 to 60 days after its theatrical release on October 25. Recent statistics show that three out of the last four major releases from Sony have followed a 46-day window from theatrical to digital release. This makes it likely that “Venom: The Last Dance” will also adhere to this timeline, suggesting it could become available on digital platforms around December 10.

When Will Venom: The Last Dance Release on Streaming?

Predicting when “Venom: The Last Dance” (which seems to have retconned the final scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home”) will be available on a streaming service is somewhat complicated for several reasons.

First, the release dates for streaming are heavily influenced by a movie’s box office performance. Generally, if a film is doing well at the box office and has respectable digital purchase numbers, it will take longer for it to be made available on a streaming platform.

As of now, it’s too soon to fully assess the box office performance of “The Last Dance”, but its initial week of earnings has not been very strong.

Below are the theatrical-to-streaming release windows for several recent Sony Pictures films. The last three movies listed—”Bad Boys: Ride or Die”, “Fly Me to the Moon”, and “It Ends With Us”—are not included, as they have not yet started streaming:

  • Anyone But You:
    • Theatrical: December 22, 2023
    • Netflix: April 23, 2024 (123 days later)
  • Madame Web:
    • Theatrical: February 14, 2024
    • Netflix: May 14, 2024 (90 days later)
  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire:
    • Theatrical: March 22, 2024
    • Netflix: July 22, 2024 (76 days later)

It’s important to mention the streaming rights deal that Sony has with Netflix and Disney, which outlines how long a new release will be available on one streaming service before moving to another.

“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” is included in this agreement. The deal stipulates that once “Bad Boys” is added to a streaming service, it will be exclusively available on Netflix for 18 months, a period known as the “pay 1 window.”

After the 18 months are over, the “pay 2 window” begins, allowing Disney to stream “Bad Boys” on Disney+ and/or Hulu.

Similarly, “Venom: The Last Dance,” which received its own special popcorn bucket, is also part of this deal. Fans will have the chance to watch this movie exclusively on Netflix for the first 18 months after it begins streaming. Following that period, Disney can add it to its offerings on Disney+ and/or Hulu.

Due to the underwhelming box-office performance of “The Last Dance”, its theatrical-to-streaming release window is likely to be shorter, possibly between 70 to 90 days. If this occurs, the movie could be available on Netflix as early as mid-January 2025 or by early February at the latest.

If that timeline is accurate, the 18-month exclusive period for streaming on Netflix would conclude around the summer of 2026. After that, “Venom: The Last Dance” is expected to be available for streaming on Disney+ and/or Hulu. Currently, *Venom: The Last Dance* is playing in theaters.

Marvel Is Already Setting Up How Venom Can Return After The Last Dance

The topic “Marvel Is Already Setting Up How Venom Can Return After The Last Dance” has two versions, a written one, and a video version below the written one.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for “Venom: The Last Dance.”

Marvel has already set the stage for Venom’s return after “The Last Dance” in Sony’s universe. In the final installment of Sony’s “Venom” trilogy, Eddie Brock and his symbiote were separated due to a significant sacrifice made to prevent the major cosmic villain Knull, the Symbiote God, from escaping his prison in space. However, it appears there are several ways in which the Lethal Protector could make a comeback in the future.

In “Venom: The Last Dance”, it is revealed that Tom Hardy’s character, Eddie Brock, and the symbiote Venom share a unique bond that creates a codex. This bond originated when the symbiote revived Eddie from life-threatening wounds inflicted by Riot at the end of the first “Venom” movie. This codex is crucial for Knull’s release from the symbiote homeworld of Klyntar, which explains why he dispatches his symbiote-hunting creatures, known as xenophages, to pursue it. Although this motivates Venom to sacrifice himself at the end of “The Last Dance”, there are still several potential ways the symbiote can return and re-bond with Eddie in the future.

There Are Still Pieces Of Venom Left In The Marvel Multiverse

“Venom: The Last Dance” clearly establishes that the death of either Venom or Eddie would result in the destruction of the codex. This is why, at the end of the movie, Venom sacrifices himself—not only to save Eddie but also to eliminate the key to Knull’s freedom. However, both the beginning and the end of Venom: The Last Dance suggest that Venom is likely still alive.

Although it was shown in The Last Dance, the piece of the Venom symbiote that remained in the MCU, as seen at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, was never retrieved. Therefore, it’s reasonable to believe that a small fragment of Venom still exists on Earth-616, which could potentially return to Eddie in the future—or even to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man for his own Symbiote Saga.

In the post-credits scene of “Venom: The Last Dance”, a fragment of the Venom symbiote collected by Rex Strickland from Area 55 has survived. It is shown crawling around the rubble of the secret government facility as a cockroach. This suggests the possibility that one or both of these symbiote fragments could eventually come together again to reconstitute Eddie’s symbiote partner.

Venom 3 Heavily Implies Eddie Brock Will Become A Father

In “Venom: The Last Dance,” a significant portion of the story explores the possibility of Eddie Brock becoming a father. During their journey, Eddie encounters Martin Moon (played by Rhys Ifans), a free-spirited believer in aliens. Eddie and Venom hitch a ride with Martin’s family, who assist them on their way to Las Vegas.

Throughout the trip, Eddie forms a bond with Martin’s son, Leaf. When Leaf expresses his fears about aliens, Eddie reassures him and helps him confront those fears, especially when Leaf learns that Eddie is host to an alien symbiote. Additionally, the Venom symbiote itself mentions in “The Last Dance” that Eddie would make a great dad.

This may reference Eddie Brock’s status in the original Marvel Comics, where he is revealed to be a father just before Knull invaded Earth in the 2020 crossover event, “King in Black.” Similarly, Eddie having a son in the Sony universe could lead to some intriguing developments.

Venom Could Return Bonded With Dylan Brock Instead Of Eddie

The Current Venom In Marvel Comics

Marvel Is Already Setting Up How Venom Can Return After The Last Dance

In the original Marvel Comics, Dylan Brock’s mother is Anne Weying, who was Eddie Brock’s former girlfriend. Both Eddie and the Venom symbiote are technically considered Dylan’s fathers, which explains the impressive powers and control he exhibits over symbiotes that developed during the “King in Black” storyline. As a result, Dylan becomes a key target for Knull, the Symbiote God. Following Eddie’s victory over Knull, he becomes the new King in Black, while Dylan takes on the role of Venom’s new host. This development could potentially be explored in Sony’s live-action universe as well.

If Dylan were to be introduced in a future Sony project and developed a bond with one of Venom’s pieces, he could become a new on-screen Lethal Protector, just like he has been in the comics since 2021. This development would allow “Venom: The Last Dance” to truly mark the conclusion of Eddie and Venom’s story, as actor Tom Hardy has frequently mentioned in interviews and during the film’s promotional campaign. The symbiotic reins could effectively be passed on to the next generation.

Sony's Marvel Universe Already Set Up Another Venom Replacement

If Sony chooses to leave Venom out of their live-action universe, it’s worth noting that they set up a replacement symbiote hero by the end of “Venom: The Last Dance”. One of the few survivors from the battle between the symbiotes at Area 55 and Knull’s xenophages was Doctor Teddy Payne (played by Juno Temple). Having bonded with a purple symbiote that closely resembles Agony from the original comics, it’s possible that Agony and Payne could appear in future Sony projects—especially if Knull breaks free and threatens to engulf the universe in darkness.

“After all, it would certainly be odd if Venom wasn’t involved in a future movie where Knull becomes the main villain and primary threat…”

Venom’s return seems highly likely. Although it may not feature Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock, it’s evident that Sony has strategically created multiple avenues for the Lethal Protector to reappear after “The Last Dance.” It would indeed be strange if Venom were absent from a future film where Knull emerges as the main villain and primary threat.

“Venom: The Last Dance” is currently playing in theaters from Sony Pictures.
